he should've joined the resistance

The Last Metro (Le Dernier métro) (1980)
3 Stars
Directed by François Truffaut
Starring Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu

It's got a bit of Truffaut, and Depardieu's usual fine performance, but Deneueve seems to suck the life out of it. What do people see in her? Is it possible to empathize with a mannequin? There's some suspense, yet curiously little considering it's a story about fugitive Jews and the French Resistance in WWII. I love Truffaut's early films (especially Jules et Jim) — did he just run out of ideas towards the end?
