The Snake Pit (1948)
3 Stars
Directed by Anatole Litvak
Starring Olivia de Havilland
An early "looney bin" movie, more akin to Splendor in the Grass and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest than Hitchcock's Spellbound. As always, wide-eyed, furrow-browed Olivia de Havilland is pleasant to watch, even without makeup, but she breaks no new ground here. A perfect example of the "show-me-the-Oscar" school of acting, although she did not win for this one. An excellent movie for anyone who's been in a coma since 1948. (This is one of the very few 20th Century Fox movies where their memorable fanfare does not play over the searchlight logo — although it does play later on in the movie, when the characters attend a Fox movie.)
