swedish vamp

Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) (2008)
4 Stars
Directed by Tomas Alfredson

With Let the Right One In, even the Scandinavians have jumped on the vampire bandwagon. I won't go into more plot detail than that, as the movie is best watched with no preconceptions, but let me just say this is neither Underworld nor 30 Days of Night. It is, on the surface, akin to Twilight, only with a bleak Scandinavian style that does a better job of getting to the heart of the matter. It is a movie that elicits compassion rather than fright (okay, maybe a little bit of that too), and deserves a place in my tentative Top Ten Scandinavian Movies List:
  1. Scenes from a Marriage (Scener ur ett äktenskap) (mini-series)

  2. Breaking the Waves

  3. Aberdeen

  4. Fanny and Alexander (Fanny och Alexander)

  5. Dogville

  6. After the Wedding (Efter bylluppet)

  7. Italian for Beginners (Italiensk for begyndere)

  8. My Life as a Dog (Mitt liv som hund)

  9. Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in)

  10. Smiles of a Summer Night (Sommarnattens leende)

Oh, and in case you're wondering, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is next in my Netflix Instant Watching queue.
