The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)
2 Stars
Written and Directed by Woody Allen
Starring Mia Farrow, Jeff Daniels, Danny Aiello
A strong concept (a movie character leaves the screen for the real world to brighten the life of a battered Depression-era wife) combined with an infectious exuberance for the Golden Age of Hollywood. But, like most Woody Allen movies I've seen, its few chuckles are far outnumbered by hammy duds delivered by poorly-prepared actors (at least Woody doesn't act in this one).
I keep telling myself I won't waste my time with any more Woody Allen movies, but there is something about his romantic vision that keeps me coming back. I suppose I'll fork over ten dollars pretty soon to see Match Point.
