Here's an interesting chart of Japan DSLR sales in the 3rd week of April 2006:

Canon shipped almost as many units of its top-ranked Canon 350D (Kiss Digital N in Japan, Digital Rebel XT in the USA) as the number sold of the next three (Nikon D50, Canon 30D, Nikon D200) combined.

Even more interesting is that the entry-level Canon and entry-level Nikon together make up over half of the Japanese DSLR market.

The Canon 30D is outselling the D200. It'd be interesting to see if this is just a temporary effect due to the 30D having just been released.

Finally, note that more than half of all DSLRs sold in Japan are Canons. 5 out of every 6 are either a Nikon or Canon, and Canon outsells Nikon almost 2-to-1. Not quite Intel vs. AMD or IBM vs. Apple - which is great, because both Canon and Nikon DSLRs have shortcomings that will hopefully be addressed under heavy competition.
