amazon ship date pushed back

So I was hoping to get my new lens in time for Bay to Breakers, but I just got a response to my emailed inquiry about availability, and now they say they don't expect it to ship (arrive?) until May 22 (the day after Bay to Breakers). The original shipping window was May 1-15.

They were nice enough to upgrade shipping for free and said they'd throw in a $20 gift certificate (on a $1179 lens) as amends.

I guess it's more than most retailers would do, but Amazon has been unpredictable for me lately. They currently list this lens at $1700, whereas every other U.S. online retailer lists it for $1179 (which is still $20 more than Canon's estimated street price). When the Canon 30D was announced, they listed it for something like $99,999, and later offered it in a kit with the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM for only $100 more than the body alone. Of course, everyone knew that they'd made a mistake and meant the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 "kit" lens, but not a few people took them up on what was ostensibly a 40% off sale, only to be (unjustifiably) disappointed when the kit lens showed up.

Either something has happened to lower Amazon's quality of service, or else they don't take cameras seriously enough. The problem is serious camera stores like Adorama are even more of a pain in the ass to deal with.
